General inspection of your new windows and doors
It’s always worth routinely carrying out a general inspection just to ensure everything works correctly. You may notice stiff window handles or door locks that could be a sign your windows and doors need adjustment.
If you spot any damage on the powder-coated finish or visible bare aluminium underneath the colour, this should be repaired as quickly as possible to avoid the untreated surface underneath becoming worse.
For bifolding and sliding doors, always ensure that the tracks are clean and clear. If your doors do not slide or fold correctly, judder or don’t close easily, these should be looked at. Cleaning the powder-coated finish on your window frames
Cleaning the frames is perhaps the easiest task when it comes to how maintaining aluminium windows. It’s the best way to ensure the surface finish looks its best. Cleaning the frames also lets you spot damage promptly and get it repaired.
You only need a soft sponge and a mild soapy solution to clean your frames. Once cleaned, you can wipe it off with a damp clean cloth or sponge.
It’s important to ensure powder-coated windows in coastal or city centre locations are cleaned more frequently as not doing so can, over time, fade the colour finish. It’s often the case that high-level window frames are not cleaned as often, and neither are aluminium rooflights or roof glazing. We do recommend arranging a professional cleaning of frames in hard-to-reach areas. They need the same level of care as your ground-floor doors and windows.
General cleaning and lubrication of doors and windows
Everyone has their preference on how to clean and what products to use. However, we have created a mini selection of products or items you can use:
- A soft brush to wipe away debris from door tracks
- Vacuum Cleaner also for patio and bifold door tracks
- Clean cloths for the glass
- Suitable glass cleaner
- Mild detergent for the aluminium frames
- Penetrating oil for the hinges and locks
You can use the soft brush to wipe away dirt and debris from inside the window or door frames and your door tracks. You can use the vacuum cleaner in the tracks and thresholds if this helps remove small stones, leaves or other debris, as well as where a brush may not reach.
You can spray the spring locks to prevent stiffness and also the window hinges with the lubricating/penetrating oil.
