Lantern roofs and rooflights, answers to popular questions
Thinking about a glass roof or rooflight? Get in touch for expert help and advice. Here are some answers to questions asked about this modern aluminium and glass products.
What is the difference between a roof lantern and a skylight?
A lantern roof is usually larger and sits above a roof, adding light from above, available in all manner of sizes and numbers or roof bars. Rooflights are typically one pane of glass fitted into the roof itself at the same angle.
Can you add a roof lantern to an existing roof?
You can add a roof lantern to an existing roof but it has to be a flat roof. You cannot add a roof lantern to a sloping roof.
Do roof lanterns make a room hot?
You should plan ventilation as part of your overall project design. Roof lanterns in themselves are not responsible for a hotter room. And most come with some type of solar control glass, coated or insulated, designed to reduce solar gain into the room and keep it more comfortable.
Are roof lanterns noisy in the rain?
Any rainfall falling on a flat or sloped surface, especially heavy rain can be heard, but the benefits of masses of light and a spacious modern room outweigh any noise you hear when it rains.
Do yo need planning permission for a lantern roof?
Always check with your local authority, but typically they do not need planning permission when not extending above the sloping pane of the existing roof. Contact us for more information.
