Sliding Patio Doors – Frequently asked questions
Thinking about a new sliding patio door? Here are some answers to our commonly asked questions about these advanced, slim, innovative patio doors.
Are sliding doors a good idea?
One of the most popular doors for property projects, sliding doors are an excellent product to transform your home. The significant advantage of a sliding door is that it can give you the largest possible panes of glass compared with French doors or bifold doors. More glass, plenty of light, better views and less frame are all available with a sliding door. It is possible to create a sliding door at five metres wide or more with just one central mullion. Sliding doors can also come with a low-set track, letting your internal flooring and outside decking or slabs be flush with no loss of weather protection.
What are the problems with sliding doors?
When correctly manufactured and installed, there should be no problems with a quality aluminium sliding door. Any problems with sliding doors are usually also caused by a dirty track, preventing the doors from sliding smoothly. Rarely does a well-designed, made and fitted sliding door cause any problems.
What types of sliding doors are available?
Sliding doors are available in several types, including products designed for new builds or existing openings. Doors start at two panels, then three, four or six. You can design your new sliding doors with a fixed or open corner design and even doors sliding into a wall pocket, disappearing out of view. Sliding doors also offer single, double or triple tracks, allowing one or all panels to slide in the desired direction. Our aluminium doors are available in a range of standard and bold colours including the popular shade Anthracite Grey- the possibilities are endless with our sliding doors.
What is better sliding doors or bifold doors?
Both sliding doors and bifold doors are excellent products. Sliding doors are great when you want to create a sliding glass wall, have a large garden or great views and want to maximise these. Bifolding doors can be better for smaller properties and gardens because when fully folded back they connect the house to the garden, making it feel larger.
What is inline vs lift and slide?
Inline sliding doors work slide across their tracks in a push/pull action using a convenient handle, with the door locking separately. Lift and slide doors use a more advanced sliding method where the handle is rotating slightly off the track, ready to slide to the desired position. Both sliding types are reliable. The lift and slide also offer the facility to open the door partially and set it back down, meaning it can’t be pushed open from the outside.
